Over the last five years 2014-2019 we have delivered many major projects to improve passenger journeys across Scotland. We have electrified 325 km of Scotland's central railway network: between Edinburgh and Glasgow, Cumbernauld and Glasgow, Holytown and Midcalder and from Grangemouth through Falkirk and Stirling to Alloa and Dunblane. An unprecedented amount of work in such a short period of time.
In the North and North East of Scotland we have carried out improvements between Aberdeen-Inverness and to the Highland Main Line that will bring real benefits to Inverness and communities along those railway corridors. The £400 million investment will improve connectivity, journey choice and journey times from Inverness and for communities along the east coast main line route to Aberdeen and onto the central belt. Similar connectivity, journey choice and journey time improvements will be delivered by new infrastructure, new trains and new timetable for Inverness and for communities along the Highland Main Line to Perth and onto the central belt.
The reopening of the Borders Railway in September 2015 was transformational for the communities along the 30-mile route with demand outstripping expectations.
