In 2017, work began to extend three platforms to accommodate longer, high capacity trains. The extension of platform 12, extended to accommodate eight carriage trains being introduced on the Edinburgh to Glasgow route (via Falkirk), was completed and commissioned in December 2017. Work to extend platforms 5&6, including the associated track and signalling works, which would accommodate 10-carriage trains being introduced on the East Coast Main Line between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross, is due to be completed in spring 2019.

Since the establishment of Network Rail there have been numerous programmes which have transformed the station through improving access, increasing rail capacity and improving the station environment for station users.

- the 34,000m² station roof was replaced with clear, strengthened glass to shed new light on the station concourse and platforms

- various station improvement works were undertaken including the refurbishment of the station concourse.

- Waverley Steps were refurbished which involved regrading the steps into shorter flights with handrails, installing escalators and the installation of a steel and glass canopy to protect station users from the elements. Two lifts were also installed to provide step-free access from Princes Street.
2008年：
- A programme to help to reduce congestion, increase the number of services and smooth journeys for everyone included two new, longer platforms, extensive track remodelling and new signalling.
