Throughout the apprenticeship, you’ll be guided by Senior Engineering leaders who will help you to grow and develop. You’ll also get the opportunity to work independently as well as within a team while learning how to thrive in high pressured environments.

Overview

Level 5 Apprenticeship scheme

  • You will be based in York, Doncaster, Derby, Ipswich, Leeds, Manchester and London Stratford.
  • The scheme lasts for four years.
  • Your starting salary will be competitive.

Level 6 Apprenticeship scheme

  • You will be based in London, Derby, York, Manchester, or Leeds
  • The scheme lasts for five years.
  • Your starting salary will be competitive.

What you’ll be doing

This apprenticeship is an exciting one as it offers the opportunity to work across multiple disciplines including: Signaling, Telecoms, Civils, E&P (Electrification & Plant), Systems, Building and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition). In this scheme, we’ll teach you how to lead people and teams as well as helping create a safe and sustainable environment for everyone.

You will lead and supervise individuals and teams in the delivery of Rail Engineering tasks. You will need to understand how the railway works as an integrated, complex system and take proactive actions and decisions to avoid any equipment, process, and systems failures. This will include involvement in areas including:

  • The construction, installation, renewal, enhancement, and modification of The Railway.
  • Fault finding and diagnosis, maintenance, and replacement of a range of complex systems and components.
  • Ensuring assets are installed, enhanced, replaced, maintained, tested, and inspected to specification maintaining required records and making recommendations for and delivery of system improvements.

There’s plenty of learning in these schemes, you will be taught the core knowledge, skills and behaviour needed to get you on the path to achieving your Engineering qualifications.

To widen your skillset in as many areas as possible, you’ll participate in planned rotations across several different functions. There’s part time training along with internal training throughout so you’ll gain the appropriate skills for a career with Network Rail.

What you’ll get out of it

If you complete our level 5 engineering apprenticeship scheme. This Apprenticeship Standard aligns with the current edition of the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC).The experience gained and responsibility held by the apprentice on completion of the apprenticeship partially contributes to the requirements for further IEng qualifications

If you complete our level 6 engineering scheme, you’ll achieve a Level 6 Rail and Rail Systems Senior Engineering Integrated Degree.

The apprenticeship standard aligns with the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC) at Incorporated Engineering (IEng) level. It is recognised as a bachelor’s degree level.

The wide range of skills you can acquire from this apprenticeship will be transferrable to other disciplines and professions .

The entry requirements

  • A Level BBB including Mathematics and/or Physical Sciences (120 UCAS points) or;
  • BTEC National Diploma DDM, including Level 3 Mathematics and Physical Sciences (128 UCAS points) or;
  • EAL Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering Technologies, D, including: Further Engineering Mathematics; Electrical and Electronic Engineering Principles; and other options relevant to Electrical and Electronic Engineering or;
  • Access to HE qualifications with 24 Distinctions and 21 Merits, with at least half the course in Mathematics and Physical Science subjects (122 UCAS points) or;
  • Equivalent level 3 qualifications worth 120 UCAS points and including Mathematics and Physical Sciences
  • Applicants must hold 5 GCSEs A-C including Maths and English or equivalent (reformed GCSEs grade 4 or above) or;
  • 国际英语资格students: IELTS score of 6.0 or Cambridge Proficiency or Advanced Grade C, and a Mathematics qualification equivalent to reformed GCSE grade 4 or above, as assessed by UK NARIC.
